THANK YOU TO everyone who reached out after I sent my letter last week! I might have exaggerated the level or nature of my miserableness...then again maybe I didn't. In any case, watching the Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime show gave me enough joy to last until spring.

Michaela has a short week this week and next at school, so this letter is short on words (but long on cartoons).

Three Things Keeping Me Going This Week

  1. The Hero of This Book by Elizabeth McCracken

If there is such a genre as the "mommy memoir" then I am fully guilty of indulging in it, from Vivian Gornick's classic Fierce Attachments to the one that I read just last year by Annie Ernaux, A Woman's Story. I am pleased to add McCracken's entry to this storied group. Reading this felt like hanging out with a close friend, one with a wickedly dry sense of humor. She intersperses stories about her mother with a trip she took to London after her mother died. This is my first McCracken. I had avoided her for some reason but now I'm eager to "crack" her oeuvre. (Too much? Sorry.)

  1. OLYMPICS!! I got strangely into curling this year? The teams are co-ed and I like watching them work that little broom thing.
  2. It's warm out. The days are lengthening. I felt sun on my face for the first time in weeks.

That's it for this week, my dear Mushroom Heads. I hope you have a great Valentine's Day, and President's Day, and Lunar New Year, and Fat Tuesday, and Ramadan, and Pączki Day!

Love,

Claire
